It's 2067, and Stevens High School's inaugural cohort of students is about to begin their first year of study together. Scientist, founder, and self-made principal Ginnifer Maiers has developed a chemical compound called FLS68 to improve the academic and creative performance of the teenagers under her care. When a student ingests FLS68, a flesh-and-blood projection of another person is created, with a personality that matches the relational needs and desires that the student has. Because of a wireless system that connects the chips planted in each student’s brain, the rest of the student body and faculty can also see and interact with all of the projections. Maiers believes that this system will enable students to perform at their best because no relational angst will distract them from accomplishing their work. Valerye Edwards, along with her older brother, Parker, is enrolled at Stevens High against her will. Skeptical about the drug and its effects, Valerye makes it her goal to navigate through the year without creating or befriending any projections. After getting to know Everest better, an older student who shares the same concerns, she begins to plot a way of breaking free of her parents' and the Stevens High staff's clutches. However, she ends up learning that not everything is as she perceives it to be.

I absolutely loved this novel. I got it today and meant to read it over the weekend, but I immediately got hooked and could not stop reading it. My heart is still tachycardic from the ending (and the fact that this book is now over, noooooo :'().The Bird Song presents a very interesting dystopic concept (creating real-life projections of people who would meet all of your social/relational needs so that you can achieve your full potential) and executes it brilliantly. There is not a single dull or irrelevant moment in the book; the first chapter allows us to learn about this world as Valerye (and Parker) do, and immerses us quickly. Everything - the plot, the friendships, the drama - just unfolds very naturally. It helps that the main characters are extremely easy to relate to; after all, I would be very wary of this world, too. There's A LOT of dialogue, which I loved (it's hard for me to get through pages of description), and it was all very ... real - the bantering siblings who do care about each other, the roommates who are quite different but can only rely on each other in this confusing world, the budding romantic relationships, certain faculty members' personal insecurities spilling over into their professional lives, the surprisingly thought-provoking discussions loosened by alcohol. Although all of the dialogue was really fun to read, I was especially impressed by the more philosophical discussions in the classroom (or bar) setting. They could've very easily been a pedantic soapbox for the author (looking at you, Ayn Rand), but they were perfect - providing just enough to make me think more about the implications of this experiment beyond the concrete individualized experiences of the various characters.
The foreshadowing was very well-done; I had a pretty strong suspicion of what Alana was up to, but I was content to let it be - and then absolutely enthralled to see how that spiraled. For such a short book, the characters were very well-developed, and I definitely felt emotionally invested in Valerye, Parker, Everest and Alana. Troy's actions, projections and increasing complacency built up the suspense pretty well; something was going to happen, but I couldn't see how it ended. Overall, there were some predictable parts, but I think those were all very intentional - after all, my curiosity for how they would culminate kept me reading.
The Bird Song is an amazing first novel, and I can't wait to see more from this new author. :)
